The heatwave from a minibus in the North of Germany.

Updated: Mar 6, 2024

The trees cause a strobe effect through the bus window.

It is, at once, nauseating and cinematic.

A premature autumn has come, though the temperatures remain raised,

Another record high in fact, again,

Third time this year, they say.

October leaves swathe the July paths.

Premature fall as the heat dehydrates the leaves and a false autumn onset prevails.

As we travel forward through the flat lands,

All thatched roofs and bricks and beams, a Frisian idyll.

Miraculously the corn fields reach for the ever beating sun,

For now, at least.

But other fields lay barrow brown and yearning yellow.

The wind makes an ocean of the desperate crops as they dance - make waves.

They sway, and emulate water, the crops are the ever moving sea.

Which on reflection, seems a sick twist of fate.

Tides of once green, now wane in the dominant heat.

Once optimistic cabbages lay shrivelled, and desperate.

Bolted lettuce, limp leaves, straw stems.
